School Curtians Canada and USA

Fire-Rated Curtains, Stage Fabrics & Custom Fabrication for Schools Across Canada & the United States

Schools rely on their performance spaces far more than most people realize.

A single auditorium may host assemblies, concerts, graduation ceremonies, theatre productions, guest speakers, award presentations, parent meetings, community events, and seasonal performances throughout the year. Gymnasiums are frequently converted into temporary event venues. Cafeterias become presentation spaces. Multi-purpose rooms transform into theatres.

The challenge is creating spaces that are professional, safe, durable, and capable of serving multiple purposes without requiring constant maintenance.

At Equus Fabrics, we supply stage curtains, fire-rated fabrics, pipe and drape systems, blackout materials, custom printed backdrops, and fabrication services for schools throughout Canada and the United States.

Whether a project involves replacing aging auditorium curtains, upgrading a stage, creating temporary room divisions, or building a new performance space, our team works directly with schools, school boards, contractors, architects, and facility managers to identify solutions that fit both the budget and the application.

The School Auditorium Remains the Heart of the Building

While technology has changed dramatically over the years, the function of the school stage has remained largely the same.

Students still perform.

Teachers still present.

Communities still gather.

Because these spaces are used repeatedly over many years, schools often prioritize fabrics that balance appearance, durability, and code compliance.

IFR Velour continues to be one of the most commonly specified auditorium fabrics because it provides excellent light control, a professional appearance, and long-term performance without requiring retreatment. Its rich texture helps frame performances while concealing backstage activity and production equipment.

For masking applications and light control, many schools also utilize Duvetyne and blackout fabrics to improve stage functionality and presentation quality.

Designed for Daily Use

Unlike professional theatres that may host a limited number of productions each year, school facilities experience constant use.

Curtains are opened and closed repeatedly. Spaces are reconfigured for different events. Equipment is moved in and out. Students interact with the environment daily.

This is why schools often prioritize materials that are durable, easy to maintain, and capable of performing consistently over time.

The right fabric selection can significantly reduce replacement costs while helping maintain a professional appearance for years.

Fire Code Compliance Matters

Public educational facilities often require materials suitable for assembly occupancies and public environments.

Selected fabrics are available for projects requiring CAN/ULC-S109 and NFPA 701 compliance depending on the application and selected material.

Supporting certificates and documentation may be available upon request.

For school boards, architects, and facility managers, having the appropriate documentation available often simplifies approvals and project planning.

More Than Stage Curtains

Modern schools require flexibility.

Many facilities use pipe and drape systems to temporarily divide gymnasiums, create backstage areas, separate event spaces, establish presentation zones, or support travelling performances and community events.

Custom printed backdrops have also become increasingly popular for graduations, school productions, fundraising events, athletic programs, and branded school environments.

Because fabric graphics can be stored, transported, and reused efficiently, they often provide schools with a practical alternative to permanent scenic elements.

Fabrication & Installation Support

Every school stage is different.

Ceiling heights vary. Existing hardware may need to be retained. Curtain fullness requirements differ from one facility to the next.

For most auditorium installations, fullness between 50% and 100% is commonly specified depending on the desired appearance and budget. Higher fullness creates a richer, more professional presentation while improving the visual depth of the curtain system.

Equus Fabrics works with fabrication teams capable of producing custom stage curtains, traveller systems, masking curtains, backdrop panels, room dividers, and pipe and drape drapery.

Schools may purchase fabric only or choose complete fabrication services depending on project requirements.

Most fabrication projects are completed approximately two to three weeks following final approval.
