Choosing the Right Fabric for a Church Sanctuary
For churches, fabric selection must balance acoustic performance, appearance, and fire safety. We typically focus on:
-
Reducing echo and improving speech intelligibility
-
Maintaining a warm, welcoming aesthetic (often light neutrals or off-whites)
-
Meeting CAN/ULC fire code requirements for public assembly spaces
-
Long-term durability for curtains that may open and close regularly
This is where experience matters. Not all curtain fabrics perform the same, even if they appear similar.
Velour vs Decorative IFR Fabrics vs Duvetyne
IFR Velour (Most Common Church Choice)
Heavy velour remains the gold standard for acoustic curtain applications in churches.
-
Excellent sound absorption due to weight and pile
-
Soft, traditional appearance suited to sanctuaries
-
Available in select light and neutral colours
Depending on the size of the space and the level of acoustic control needed, we often recommend:
-
23oz IFR Velour for general sanctuary applications
-
25oz IFR Velour for larger sanctuaries or spaces with higher reverberation
Decorative Fire-Rated Fabrics
For churches seeking a lighter or more contemporary look, decorative fire-rated velvet or polyester fabrics can be an effective alternative. While they provide slightly less absorption than heavy velour, they still offer meaningful acoustic improvement when used with proper fullness.
A common option is Fire Velvet, which balances appearance, compliance, and performance.
Why Duvetyne Is Usually Not Recommended
Duvetyne is designed primarily for blackout and masking applications. It is typically black, visually flat, and intended for backstage or technical use. While it can absorb some sound, it is rarely suitable for front-of-house sanctuary curtains, especially where light neutral colours and visual warmth are important.

-
We keep projects local and straightforward, cutting out unnecessary layers
Churches appreciate having one knowledgeable point of contact rather than coordinating multiple suppliers.

See the Fabric Before You Decide
Every sanctuary responds differently to fabric. Lighting, wall finishes, and ceiling height all affect both acoustics and appearance. That’s why we encourage churches to review samples in their actual space before committing.
Local clients are also welcome to visit our showroom to see and feel fabric options in person and speak directly with our team.
Serving Toronto, the GTA & Beyond
While our focus is Toronto and the GTA — including Mississauga, Brampton, and Vaughan — we also regularly ship to churches across Canada, including projects in Surrey and throughout British Columbia.
