Supporting Theatres, Performing Arts Centres & Community Stages Across Canada and the United States
Every theatre tells a different story.
Some are century-old performing arts venues that have hosted generations of audiences. Others are modern black box theatres designed for flexibility. Many are community spaces balancing productions, concerts, rentals, school performances, and public events throughout the year.
What they all have in common is the need for reliable stage infrastructure.
A theatre’s curtain system is more than a decorative feature. It influences sightlines, audience experience, lighting control, acoustics, scene changes, backstage operations, and the overall professionalism of every production that takes place on stage.
At Equus Fabrics, we work with theatres, performing arts centres, municipalities, universities, community venues, and production teams throughout Canada and the United States to help upgrade, replace, fabricate, and maintain stage environments that perform reliably year after year.
Theatre Spaces Are Constantly Evolving
Many theatre facilities operate with curtain systems that have been in place for decades.
Over time, fabrics fade, hardware wears out, fire code requirements change, and performance expectations increase.
A renovation does not always mean replacing everything.
Some projects involve replacing front-of-house curtains while retaining existing tracks. Others focus on upgrading masking systems, improving backstage functionality, increasing acoustic control, or creating more versatile performance environments capable of supporting multiple production styles.
The challenge is often finding solutions that work within the limitations of the existing theatre while improving the experience for performers, technicians, and audiences alike.
Working Around Production Schedules
Unlike many commercial renovation projects, theatres rarely shut down for extended periods.
Performance calendars, rentals, community programming, and seasonal productions often create narrow installation windows.
Because of this, planning becomes just as important as fabrication.
Our team regularly works with technical directors, facility managers, consultants, and production staff to help coordinate projects around operational requirements, minimizing disruption whenever possible.
For many venues, maintaining continuity between productions is just as important as the final result.
Fabrication Built Around Performance Requirements
No two theatres operate exactly the same way.
Some require grand drapes designed to create visual impact the moment the curtain opens. Others prioritize masking systems, travellers, borders, legs, cycloramas, projection surfaces, or acoustic treatments.
Curtain fullness, stage dimensions, rigging requirements, and performance objectives all influence how a system is fabricated.
Theatres often require custom fabrication because standard off-the-shelf solutions rarely account for the unique characteristics of a performance space.
Depending on project requirements, fabrication can include weighted hems, webbing, grommets, tie lines, pleated finishes, custom fullness ratios, and stage-specific construction methods designed to withstand years of operation.
Fire Code Compliance & Venue Requirements
Public performance venues are held to high standards.
Whether the theatre is municipally owned, university operated, privately managed, or community funded, fire code compliance remains an important consideration during renovation and replacement projects.
Selected fabrics are available for applications requiring CAN/ULC-S109 and NFPA 701 compliance depending on the material selected and project requirements.
Supporting documentation may be available when required by consultants, inspectors, architects, or facility managers.
Beyond Curtains
Modern theatres require more than a main drape.
Many venues also utilize blackout systems, acoustic treatments, projection environments, temporary event drapery, printed scenic elements, stage masking systems, and room division solutions for rehearsals, educational programs, and special events.
Custom printed fabrics have become increasingly popular within theatre environments as productions seek more flexibility while reducing scenic construction costs.
Digital textile printing allows scenic imagery, backgrounds, and production-specific graphics to be produced on fabric surfaces that are easier to transport, store, and install than traditional hard scenery.
Supporting Theatre Communities Across North America
Theatres occupy a unique place within every community.
They host performances, educate future artists, bring audiences together, and create experiences that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
At Equus Fabrics, we understand that theatre projects are rarely just about replacing fabric. They are about supporting spaces that continue to serve performers, technicians, volunteers, educators, and audiences for years to come.
Whether the project involves a community theatre, performing arts centre, university venue, municipal auditorium, black box theatre, or large-scale performance facility, our goal remains the same: helping create stages that are ready for the next performance.
