🎭 What Is Commando Fabric?

Commando Fabric (or Commando Cloth) is the heavyweight version of Duvetyne, designed for total light control, blackout, and flame safety.
It has a deep matte black finish that absorbs light instead of reflecting it — perfect for creating complete darkness on stage or behind the camera.

While standard Duvetyne ranges between 8 oz – 12 oz, Commando Cloth usually weighs 16 oz, offering maximum opacity and zero light bleed, even under direct lighting.

⚖️ Comparison Box – Duvetyne vs. Commando Fabric

📌 Note: 16 oz Commando Fabric is often referred to as “Heavy Duvetyne” in the industry.
If you see “heavy Duvetyne,” “Commando Cloth,” or “16 oz FR cotton,” — they all refer to the same blackout-grade fabric.

Duvetyne vs. Commando — What’s the Difference?

Both fabrics come from the same family of matte black, flame-retardant cotton, but weight and opacity set them apart.

  • Duvetyne (typically 8–12 oz) is lightweight, flexible, and ideal for general masking, draping, and photography where full blackout isn’t critical.

  • Commando Fabric (usually 16 oz) is the heavier, denser version, delivering complete blackout and higher durability for stages, studios, and permanent installs.

Think of it this way: Duvetyne hides the light — Commando erases it.

  2. I’m looking for fabric that can do a few jobs. One, I need fabric that can absorb sound well and be used as a curtain room divider for a dance studio. The second job I need it to do is to be taken down from the studio and brought to our dance recital location to form the backdrop and stage curtains for our recital’s stage. I think either Duvetyne or Commando cloth is likely what we need. Could you please send me a pricing guide for the fabrics and/or other recommendations?
    Thanks!
